For the Personal Touch
Pretoria, the administrative capital, is a bustling modern city, liberally sprinkled with historical buildings such as Paul Kruger's house, the Raadsaal, Melrose House, City Hall, the Transvaal Museum and the Union Buildings, a magnificent example of the work of Sir Herbert Baker. These buildings are now the Presidency. The history of the city area predates European settlement and makes for interesting discussion. We leave the city in an easterly direction for the village of Cullinan. Imagine what it must have been like over 100 years ago, open farmland, the start of the mine, and a diamond the size of a man’s fist! Here, we enjoy a walking tour around the mine after a presentation on it’s history and functioning and the significant diamonds found here. Models of these diamonds, the two largest ever found, are on display. There is an option to do an underground tour of this working mine. After the tour of the mine, Cullinan village provides plenty of opportuniy for an interesting stroll. Many of the buildings have been preserved, allowing a glimpse of how people lived here more than a century ago. There are also gift shops, restaurants and coffee shops. Italian prisoners of war during WWII painted murals in the Recreation Hall, and Sir Herbert Baker designed the Anglican Church. There are many interesting places in the village. The journey back passes Sammy Marks House Museum, and if time allows a stop can be made at this elegant Victorian mansion. Guided tours through the house are available by appointment. In the same vicinity is the Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum, affording a look at farming in the 1800’s and early 1900’s. Please remember - my speciality is customised tours. I will quote on a customised tour or amend itineraries to suit you.
